BurghausenKnights & Pilgrims: Burghausen and Altötting

A Trip to Europe’s Longest Castle and Germany’s Holiest Shrine

On this tour we visit two completely different but wonderful locations. The impressive Burghausen castle towers over the quaint riverside village of the same name. The castle dates back to the 11th century and it was recently discovered that man’s presence at the site goes back to the bronze age. Burghausen is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest castle in Europe – it is over one kilometer in length. The entire length of the inner courtyards provide great photo opportunities.  We’ll have an inside visit to the museum in the main building.

Lunch is at a wonderfully rustic monastery restaurant.

AltoettingIt is just a short drive to the wonderful and serene town of Altötting, which attracts more pilgrims than any other place in Germany.  They come primarily to see the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary (black Madonna) in the Chapel of Mercy, which sits in the middle of the spacious main town square. But history buffs visit the chapel, too, as it also houses urns containing the hearts of the ruling family of Bavaria, including the heart of King Ludwig II – the fairy tale King. There are two other magnificent churches on the town square as well as the Basilica of St. Anna and the Brother Konrad Monastery nearby. Altötting is a beautiful place to spend a peaceful afternoon.

This trip can also be easily modified to include a visit to Marktl am Inn, the birthplace of Pope Benedict the XVI. As with all of our tours, this trip can be customized to suit your needs and interests. Please see below for options.
