ZugspitzeOn Cloud Nine on Germany’s Highest Mountain

An Uplifting Day on the Zugspitze and in the Bavarian Alps

This tour takes you to the top of Germany – a trip up to the top of the Zugspitze mountain. At just shy of 3,00o meters (9,700 ft), the views from the summit are spectacular – one can see all the way to Italy on a fine day. On the visitors platform there are lookout platforms facing every direction. Up top you will find restaurants, including Germany’s highest Biergarten, a museum, a weather station and you can even cross the border at the top, as part of the Zugspitze is in Austria.

PartenkirchenThere is a ski area on the Zugspitze also, so the mountain is open year round.  There are three ways to the top: two modern cable cars (one on each side of the border) and an historical cog-wheel train.  We usually go up on the Austrian side, where the original cable car was built back in 1926.

We also visit the resort town of Garmisch, home to one of the 4 original alpine ski races and a fantastic Pure Bavarian village in summer. Here you will have time to shop and admire the wonderful painted buildings – and of course to shop.

We linger in the Alps a bit before heading back to Munich and visit some pretty villages and two alpine lakes along the way.

All in all it is a truly wonderful alpine experience!
